Merrist Wood College and University Centre in Surrey has opened two new buildings, calling the milestone the start of a new chapter for the institution. The college, which delivers specialist courses in land-based sectors such as agriculture and conservation, unveiled the Norman Shaw and Peyto Shrubb buildings as part of a wider redevelopment of its campus near Guildford.
The Department for Education backed the project with £21 million in funding. Group director Jo Manser said the site carries a proud history, adding that the focus now turns toward the future. She said the new facilities give learners access to modern workshops, laboratories, technology and specialist environments that closely mirror the settings they will encounter in employment or further study.
An official opening event celebrated the buildings’ launch. Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey Neelam Dharni Devesher attended to unveil a commemorative plaque and cut a floral garland marking the occasion.
Merrist Wood College and University Centre delivers further and higher education across a 400-acre estate that includes woodlands, wetlands, livestock, gardens and grasslands. The campus also houses a plant nursery, workshops and design studios, supporting hands-on training for students pursuing land-based careers.
