Background :
Several Saudi universities have been able to win different awards at the International AI on Education Competition finals that took place in Hong Kong, which is an indicator of the increasing involvement of Saudi Arabia in artificial intelligence solutions for educational purposes. The event brought together students, researchers, and innovators from across the world to present AI technologies designed to improve learning.
The competition was organised by the Artificial Intelligence Research and Education Alliance and The Education University of Hong Kong. A total of 15 teams from Saudi Arabia and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reached the finals after qualifying rounds hosted by Umm Al-Qura University.
Umm Al-Qura University recorded one of the strongest performances, winning awards for Innovative Problem Discovery, Overall Performance, and Excellence in Educational Impact, along with several Merit Awards. The university was also recognised as an international partner for hosting the GCC regional qualifying round.
Jouf University received an Excellence Award for Morph, an adaptive learning platform designed for university students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The platform uses brain signals of attention through electroencephalography (EEG) to measure levels of concentration, and then it automatically modifies study material when the learner’s level of attention drops.
King Saud University won the Excellence Award in the Zoom presentation category and qualified to the finals of the Embodied AI stream. The University of Jeddah and Baha University received the Overall Performance Awards. Also, the Merit Awards were given to Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, King Faisal University, Majmaah University, and Makkah Colleges. The Excellence Award went to Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University and participated in other competition finals.
This indicates Saudi Arabia’s continuous efforts in AI-related studies and education according to Vision 2030.
