Major South Korean technology companies are working directly with universities to create degree programs that lead straight into jobs in the artificial intelligence sector. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are among the firms helping design courses, funding scholarships, and in some cases guaranteeing employment to graduates.
These “contract departments” allow companies to shape curricula, support students financially, and build a pipeline of skilled workers. SK Hynix has partnered with Sogang University, Korea University and Hanyang University, while Samsung works with institutions including Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, and the Korea Advanced Institute for Science and Technology.
Students in these programs receive tuition coverage and monthly allowances, though they must maintain minimum grade requirements to keep their scholarships and secure employment. Those who drop out are required to repay the support they received, and graduates typically must work for the sponsoring company for a period matching the length of their funding.
Demand for these programs has surged. Data from a Seoul-based academy showed applications to major company-linked departments rose sharply compared to the previous year, with competition for Samsung and SK Hynix seats becoming increasingly intense. Admission cutoffs have also climbed year over year.
Companies are shaping more than funding. Students have toured company headquarters and overseas branches, attended lectures from company employees and executives, and presented solutions to real industry problems. Both companies said they contribute input on course design, though formal teaching remains limited.
For South Korea’s chip industry, recruitment increasingly begins years before graduation, inside university classrooms shaped by corporate partners.
