Background-
De Montfort University’s Cambodian campus has hosted the signing of a landmark agreement strengthening cooperation between the UK and Cambodia.
Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Dr Hang Chuon Naron and Baroness Winterton, the UK Government’s Minister for the Indo-Pacific, joined other dignitaries at the university’s Phnom Penh campus, where the two governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding pledging closer cooperation in education.
The agreement is meant to build stronger education links between the UK and Cambodia, giving institutions, students, educators and future leaders on both sides new ways to work together.
Officials highlighted DMU Cambodia as the first UK university campus established in Cambodia, underlining its pioneering role in the country’s higher education sector.
British Ambassador to Cambodia Dominic Williams described education as central to the relationship between the two nations, while Baroness Winterton pointed to the talent and potential of Cambodia’s people as the country’s greatest asset.
Dr Naron said he hoped the agreement would open further opportunities for Cambodian students to study in the UK.
DMU Cambodia said the occasion reflected a shared commitment to advancing higher education, promoting the exchange of knowledge and expertise, and creating greater opportunities for Cambodian students, educators and future leaders. The university added that it takes pride in being an institution where partnerships grow stronger and new possibilities for education take shape.
