VSI Executive Education took part in the UNITAR World Cup Diplomacy Summit in New York this week. The event brought together sport, government and business leaders to talk about how sport can support diplomacy and global cooperation.
UNITAR hosted the summit, backed by the United Nations, Shoosmiths, Pluggable AI, Teamworks, and Hudl. As the executive education arm of UCFB, VSI joined the conversation as major sporting events keep growing in size and global reach.
Early sessions looked at a few big topics: how sport can stay fair and well-governed, how it works as a tool for diplomacy, and how fan engagement is shifting through digital platforms and personalisation.
After that, delegates broke into smaller workshops. Four themes stood out — sport diplomacy, community and infrastructure development, fan engagement, and the use of AI and data in sport. Each group worked toward real, practical ideas that governments, sports bodies, and tech companies could act on.
One major result from the summit: progress on a new white paper called “Sport As a Platform for Diplomacy and Dialogue,” built jointly by VSI and UNITAR. It will lay out real-world guidance, case studies, and clear roles for governments, clubs, and companies looking to use sport for diplomacy and development.
Delegates also agreed to keep working together across sectors, aiming to push shared development goals forward through sport.
