China’s “Study in China” brand has become globally recognised, with Chinese language teaching now part of national education systems in 92 countries, said Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng earlier this week. Speaking at a symposium, he said international student numbers in China are rising quickly, with better enrolment structure and quality, including a notable rise in students from developed nations.
Huai said China will strengthen the “Study in China” brand further to attract talented young people from abroad and build stronger global understanding of the country. He added that China will expand cooperation with top foreign universities in science and engineering while tightening quality oversight, aiming to shift from being a participant to a leader in global education.
He noted that more than 50,000 young Americans have visited China under exchange programmes, meeting a five-year target two and a half years early, with similar European youth exchange goals also on track ahead of schedule.
Huai highlighted China’s scale as the world’s largest education system, with 440,000 schools, 280 million students and 18.7 million teachers. Preschool enrolment stood at 92.9 percent, above the OECD average, while higher education enrolment had doubled since 2012 to 61.3 percent.
He also pointed to declining birth rates reshaping education planning, noting that middle school enrolment will peak this year, followed by high school in 2029 and higher education in 2032. He called for better planning so population decline can become a talent advantage, while at the same time laying out ideas to expand artificial intelligence use across teaching and education governance.
