Background :

The Royal Navy’s Specialist Attraction Team joined the University of Cumbria in Barrow-in-Furness for a careers engagement event aimed at inspiring local students.

Stan Mcloughlin of the Royal Navy said the team worked alongside local colleges and students to showcase the range of career paths available within the Service, giving young people insight into Royal Navy life.

Mcloughlin said Barrow offered a fitting backdrop for the event given the region’s long history with submarine design and support. He said the visit helped raise awareness of the Submarine Service, calling it a highly specialised and important capability.

He added that engaging directly with students lets the Navy share its range of opportunities and encourage interest in a career serving the nation.

Giselle Reis, Project Officer at Lancashire Skills & Employment Hub, said students engaged enthusiastically with activities delivered alongside BAE Systems Barrow, the Royal Navy and the University’s Engineering team.

She called the event a strong example of how employers, higher education and industry can work together to inspire interest in digital, cyber and engineering careers.

Students also explored career paths in defence, robotics and engineering, speaking with professionals about education routes, apprenticeships and job opportunities in Barrow.

Reis said the activity supports the DS4D Digital & Cyber Bursary programme by building student confidence and broadening career aspirations.

Jack Todd, Student Recruitment and Outreach Officer at the University of Cumbria, said events like this help young people see how their education can lead to careers shaping the future, adding that the university values its partnerships in inspiring the next generation.
