Key Background:

The University of Toronto (U of T) has secured its position as the leading university in Canada, ranking among the top 20 globally across all five broad subject areas in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2025.

The prestigious rankings, published annually by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), assess universities’ academic and research excellence in 55 specific subjects, which are then grouped into five broad categories. U of T performed exceptionally well, placing within the top 20 worldwide in all categories: life sciences and medicine (13th), social sciences and management (14th), arts and humanities (14th), engineering and technology (17th), and natural sciences (20th).

U of T President Meric Gertler emphasized that the rankings reflect the university’s comprehensive academic strengths. “These latest rankings reaffirm the breadth and depth of excellence across the University of Toronto,” he remarked. “Coupled with the global reputation of our graduates, U of T is uniquely positioned to lead in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.”

In addition to its strong overall performance, U of T ranked in the global top 10 in seven specific subjects: nursing (4th), sports-related subjects (4th), anatomy and physiology (5th), education (10th), data science (10th), theology and religious studies (10th), and philosophy (10th). U of T remains the only university in the world to rank in the top 50 in 46 specific subjects and is one of just eight universities worldwide to rank in the top 25 across 32 subjects. The university’s rankings continue to reinforce its status as a global academic leader, maintaining its place as the highest-ranked institution in Canada and one of the top public universities in multiple global rankings.
