Background
Tokyo International School (TIS) is expanding its education programme to kindergarten through Grade 12 with the opening of its new campus at Takanawa Gateway City in Tokyo. The move gives students the option to complete their full school education at the institution without transferring to another school for high school.
The new campus is located inside the Takanawa Gateway City Residence complex, within walking distance of Takanawa Gateway and Sengakuji stations. TIS previously operated from a smaller campus in Minami-Azabu.
The larger facility has allowed TIS to add Grades 11 and 12. The school phased out its preschool programme to create space for the additional high school grades. Its first Grade 12 class has 15 students, with the school expecting future graduating classes to become larger.
TIS Head of School Daniel Reynolds said completing the full K-12 journey at one school removes a major challenge for families. Previously, students had to find another school for their high school years.
TIS follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum and has received approval to offer the IB Diploma Programme for Grades 11 and 12. The programme will support students preparing for universities in Japan and overseas.
The school expects enrollment to reach about 500 students this academic year, its highest level so far. Demand is also rising, with waiting lists for students seeking admission to Grades 2 through 9.
The expansion comes as Tokyo seeks to attract more skilled international workers. Education experts say access to international schools can influence where foreign professionals and global companies choose to locate.
TIS expects its first Grade 12 students to graduate next year. The school hopes their university placements will strengthen its international reputation and support future growth.
