Background

Seoul National University will establish a graduate school of artificial intelligence by 2027 as part of its plan to become an “AI-native campus,” President Ryu Hong-lim said in his New Year’s address on January 2.

Ryu said the university will move quickly to prepare detailed guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence in education and research. He also announced plans to introduce a campus-wide license for generative AI tools so that students and faculty can use the technology in a safe and responsible way.

The move reflects SNU’s effort to respond to rapid changes in higher education and research driven by artificial intelligence. The new graduate school is expected to focus on advanced AI studies, training future experts who can support South Korea’s growing digital economy.

Ryu also highlighted a stronger push for internationalisation. He said SNU must expand its global presence across teaching, research, social contribution and administration. To support this, the university will set up an Office of International Affairs early next year. The office will manage international research projects, student exchanges and recruitment of top talent from overseas, including the United States and Europe.

On internal reforms, the president confirmed that the university will continue to improve its performance-based salary system for professors. Under the system, annual pay varies based on research output and other achievements. Ryu said this approach will raise the university’s competitiveness and improve the teaching and research environment.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of Seoul National University, South Korea’s first national university. Ryu called it a meaningful milestone and urged the academic community to show courage and wisdom in leading the country through a period of major change.

He said the university must protect its proud legacy while preparing for the future, adding that innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence and global cooperation will shape the next chapter in SNU’s history.
