Key Background:

OCAD University’s School of Continuing Studies (SCS) has entered into an exciting new collaboration with Memorial University of Newfoundland, significantly extending its reach to offer art and design education beyond the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This partnership will leverage Memorial’s Continuous, Adult and Lifelong Learning program to deliver online courses that cater to professional development, artistic exploration, and industry-specific training.

Dr. Ailsa Craig, Special Advisor to Memorial’s President, emphasized that this partnership enhances access to OCAD U’s expertise, enabling learners from rural and remote communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to engage with its diverse programs. “Working with OCAD U allows Memorial learners to benefit from the wide-ranging expertise and programming of OCAD U instructors,” Dr. Craig stated, highlighting the expansion of opportunities for creative learning in the province. She further noted that the partnership supports the growth of Newfoundland and Labrador’s vibrant creative economy.

The collaboration with Memorial University marks the seventh in a series of expanding SCS partnerships across North America. Previous collaborations include institutions such as the Dundas Valley School of Art, University of Northern British Columbia, and California Institute of the Arts. These partnerships offer SCS’s suite of online courses, which are carefully selected by each institution to meet its specific educational needs. This approach ensures that a wide range of learners across Canada and beyond can access top-tier art and design education.

The flexible, asynchronous format of the SCS online courses allows students to engage at their own pace, regardless of their location, while small class sizes foster a collaborative and supportive learning environment. Popular offerings include courses in Adobe Creative Cloud, Children’s Book Illustration, Basic Design Principles, and Social Media Marketing for Creative Professionals. Through this initiative, OCAD U reaffirms its commitment to providing accessible, innovative education to creative learners nationwide.
