Background
The higher education system in Malaysia has improved its standing in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2026, having a historic number of universities making an entrance in the top ranks in the entire region.
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS climbed to 35th place in the rankings, up from 43rd the previous year. A total of 27 Malaysian institutions featured in this year’s list, with six universities placing among Asia’s top 100 and 11 ranked within the top 200, both record highs for the country.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the results show Malaysia’s ability to emerge as a globally respected hub for education, research and innovation. He noted that while rankings are not the ultimate goal of any university, they remain an important measure of quality, reputation and competitiveness on the international stage.
Zambry attributed the outcomes to the joint efforts of academics, researchers, students, alumni, university employees, and business partners, all of whom he claimed have continuously strived to improve the position of Malaysia’s higher education sector.
He also hoped that the good work would be kept up, with an emphasis on developing top talents and making Malaysia more appealing as an option for higher education.
The outcomes achieved are a great stride for Malaysia, as far as increasing their recognition in international academic circles goes.
