Background

Iceland’s Ministry of Education and Children has partnered with Anthropic to start a nationwide AI education pilot. The project gives teachers across Iceland access to the AI tool Claude to explore how it can make teaching, lesson planning, and learning better.

Teachers from all parts of the country, from Reykjavik to small rural villages, will use Claude and get training, teaching resources, and support to help them bring AI into their classrooms. The project seeks to reduce teachers’ administrative workload, giving them more time to focus on students and creativity in the classroom.

“We’re proud to partner with Iceland’s Ministry of Education and Children to help teachers save time and create better learning experiences,” said Thiyagu Ramasamy, Anthropic’s Head of Public Sector. “By making Claude available nationwide, Iceland is demonstrating a responsible and practical approach to adopting AI in government.”

Education Minister Guðmundur Ingi Kristinsson said the project represents an important step toward understanding AI’s role in education. “Artificial intelligence is here to stay. It’s important to harness its power responsibly while ensuring it meets teachers’ needs,” he noted.

The Iceland pilot joins other Anthropic initiatives in Europe. The European Parliament uses Claude to make it easier to access millions of documents, and the London School of Economics gives students Claude to help them solve problems.

With this step, Iceland shows leadership in educational innovation by using AI to support teachers, improve learning, and protect the Icelandic language in the digital age.
