Background-
Aston University has been shortlisted in three categories at the 22nd Times Higher Education Awards, often described as the Oscars of higher education. Organizers received more than 500 entries this year, narrowing the field to 125 finalists across 20 categories.
Aston University is shortlisted for Outstanding Entrepreneurial University, while Aston Business School is in contention for Business School of the Year. Professor Victor Chang has also been shortlisted for Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year.
The Outstanding Entrepreneurial University award celebrates institutions that excel in fostering entrepreneurship and creating economic and social impact. Aston has built entrepreneurship into its 2030 Strategy through the Aston Centre for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, established as a university wide function that embeds enterprise into the curriculum and supports venture creation beyond campus.
Aston Business School highlighted its work integrating teaching, enterprise, research and community partnerships during the academic year, contributing to Aston’s ranking among the top two in England for social mobility.
Professor Chang has supervised more than 300 postgraduate researchers, guiding eight PhD students and one Doctor of Business Administration candidate to successful completion. He currently supervises four PhD students and one DBA candidate, maintaining a postgraduate satisfaction score between 90 and 100 percent.
Professor Paula Whitehouse said the nomination reflects the university’s whole institution approach to entrepreneurship. Professor Marian Garcia called the recognition a celebration of academic excellence that strengthens the region.
Chang described good supervision as closer to mentorship than management, adding that the shortlisting means more to him than any metric. The awards ceremony takes place at The Vox in Birmingham.
