Kazakhstan is strengthening its position in global higher education as 20 of its universities feature in the latest QS World University Rankings and five appear in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Nazarbayev University delivered the strongest result, securing a place in the 401-500 band of the Times Higher Education rankings. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, Satbayev University and Kazakh National Agrarian Research University also featured in the ranking.
The country is also expanding international partnerships to improve its higher education system. Branches of 33 foreign universities from countries including the US, UK, China, Germany, France, South Korea and Russia now operate in Kazakhstan.
The government is updating rules to make it easier for foreign universities to open branches while introducing common standards and stronger oversight. At the same time, Kazakhstan continues to require students to study the Kazakh language and national history.
International cooperation is also growing through joint academic programmes. More than half of Kazakhstan’s universities offer dual-degree programmes with 131 foreign institutions across 24 countries.
Manash Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University, for example, has partnered with the University of Arizona on a dual-degree programme.
Kazakhstan is also expanding its own higher education presence abroad. Local universities have opened branches in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Russia.
The growing number of international partnerships, foreign university branches and overseas campuses supports Kazakhstan’s goal of becoming a regional higher education hub.
