Background-

Academic and administrative staff from universities in 15 countries met with the Higher and Further Education Unit of the Council of Europe to discuss student rights, democratic participation and issues affecting higher education.

The meeting was held under the Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), Fostering European Citizenship: Youth Engagement, Rights and Democratic Responsibilities. The programme was organised by University of Strasbourg through Erasmus+ and brought together representatives from a range of higher education institutions.

Discussions focused on the role of universities in supporting democratic values and student participation. Participants also examined the Council of Europe Students’ Rights Charter, the recognition of academic qualifications and the European Qualifications Passport for Refugees (EQPR).

The sessions looked at ways universities can support student involvement in civic life and improve access to education. Participants also discussed measures that can help students move more easily between education systems.

The meeting ended with discussions between Council of Europe officials and university representatives on current issues facing the sector. Topics included digital security, political developments and their impact on students, researchers and academic staff.
