Background-
Microsoft has made its Study and Learn Agent generally available inside Microsoft 365 Copilot for education customers, expanding its artificial intelligence tools for schools and universities.
The new student-focused AI agent is designed to support learning through guided questioning, quizzes, flashcards and interactive exercises instead of simply providing direct answers.
The tool is available at no additional cost for Microsoft 365 Education customers and comes pre-installed for Microsoft Education A1, A3 and A5 license users.
Students aged 13 and above, along with educators, can access the tool through the Microsoft 365 Copilot application once Copilot Chat is enabled by school or institution administrators. For K-12 students, access remains controlled by IT administrators through the existing Microsoft Education environment.
Microsoft said the tool was developed to encourage active learning and help students build understanding through step-by-step guidance and practice-based learning methods.
The company added that many students already use AI tools for studying, but several platforms prioritize speed over deeper learning and understanding.
The Study and Learn Agent supports activities such as quizzes, flashcards, matching exercises and guided explanations across subjects including biology, history and mathematics.
The platform can also help students improve writing, break down difficult concepts and test understanding through follow-up questions.
Microsoft said the tool uses learning science principles such as adaptive support, active learning and productive struggle to encourage students to think independently while studying.
The company has also included IT management controls and privacy protections as part of its responsible AI approach. The tool is currently available in English in the United States, with support for additional languages expected in the coming weeks.
