Background

Seoul National University (SNU) and Jeonbuk National University have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly operate the Joint Seoul National University in the World Program (SWP), marking a new step in inter-university cooperation for global education.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony held at SNU’s Office of International Affairs. Representatives from Jeonbuk National University attended the event, and the memorandum was signed in the names of the presidents of both institutions.

SNU said the partnership marks its first joint SWP initiative with another national flagship university. The collaboration will allow the two universities to co-administer the Joint SWP in China program, which is set to begin in the 2025 winter semester. Officials said the agreement creates a long-term framework for future joint SWP programs.

The China-focused program has already drawn strong interest from students at both universities. SNU received 60 applications for 20 available spots, resulting in a three-to-one selection ratio. Jeonbuk National University received even higher demand, with 102 students applying for just 20 places, showing a five-to-one ratio.

Students selected for the program will start with a one-week preparatory course at SNU’s campus this month. The training will help participants build a foundation before traveling overseas.

After the orientation, students will head to Shanghai and Shenzhen for a two-week immersive experience. The program includes company visits, industry-focused lectures and hands-on activities designed to help students understand global business trends and economic environments.

SNU said it plans to expand this model by partnering with other national flagship universities and offering more joint SWP programs in the future. The university aims to strengthen academic cooperation and broaden its global education platform.

SNU President Ryu Hong-lim said the initiative could set a new benchmark for sharing educational resources and promoting mutual growth between universities. Jeonbuk National University President Yang O-bong added that the program will allow students to witness innovation firsthand and learn the importance of growing together in a global setting.
